GA997, an adult male pan-tropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata) stranded alive May 30, 1999 on Brian Beach in Brazoria County, Texas. Another dolphin of the same species stranded 50 yards away on the same beach six hours earlier, however it died in transport to the rehabilitation facility. This was an unusual event for an offshore species. GA997 was in critical condition and suffering from an infection as well as serious injuries to his flukes. He was tube fed and supported by volunteers in-water 24 hours a day. He suffered severe tissue damage resulting in loss of blood flow, severed tendons that controlled tail movement, and massive infection and had begun to show signs of a neurological condition. His condition continued to deteriorate and the decision was made to euthanize June 3, 1999.
