Research

Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network (TMMSN) has conducted marine mammal research along the Texas coast since 1980. TMMSN continues to:

  • Collect data and biological samples from live and dead stranded marine mammals

  • Maintain a long-term dataset to use as baseline comparative data and assess marine mammal health trends

  • Conduct photographic identification surveys in Texas bays, sounds, and estuaries (BSE) and coastal waters for live bottlenose dolphin abundance estimates, movement patterns, habitat use, and seasonal occurrence.

  • Document locations and movement patterns of West Indian Manatees in Texas waters

  • Publish findings and case studies from stranded marine mammals and marine mammal population surveys

  • Collaborate with marine mammal researchers from other institutions to contribute to published literature and presentations for the advancement of marine mammal science

  • Assess the incidence or prevalence of human induced injury or mortality for conservation management
